AI is prediction, not magic

A chatbot is not looking things up when it answers you. It is predicting the next likely word, over and over, based on patterns in text it has seen before. That process can produce something true, useful, and well-organized, but truth is not the mechanism, prediction is. The two line up often enough that fluent answers feel trustworthy by default. AI can produce a smooth and useful answer without checking reality by default. That does not make it useless. It means fluency is a starting point, not a finish line. Important claims still need a source, an acknowledgment of uncertainty, or a way to check them independently before you act on them. The habit worth building is small: before repeating a confident AI answer, ask what would prove it wrong, and whether you would notice if it were.
